Flood is usually an overflow of an expanse of water that submerges land and the inflow of tide onto land. Floods are the most frequent and costly natural hazards, causing almost 90 percent of all the damage related to natural disasters. Floods usually cause large-scale loss of human life and wide spread damage to properties. This damage is known as flood damage. Unimaginable damage will be caused to agriculture, thereby affecting the United State's planning and this will upset its financial budgeting, thereby slowing down the economy as a whole.

The effects of flood damage can be categorized into three types, namely, primary, secondary and tertiary. The primary effects of flood damage include physical damages like damage to bridges, cars, buildings, sewer systems, roadways, and even casualties like people and livestock death due to drowning. The primary effect of floods is due to direct contact with the flood waters. The velocity of water tends to be high in floods and consequently, discharge increases as velocity increases. Because of excess rainfall, the rivers and streams flow with higher velocities wherein they are able to transport larger particles like rocks as suspended load. Such large particles include not only rocks and sediment but during a flood it could also include large objects such as automobiles, houses and bridges. Massive amounts of erosion during the floods can undermine bridge structures, levees, and buildings causing their collapse.

During floods, water will also enter human built structures causing water damage. The flood damage to houses include ruining of furniture, damage to the floors and walls of the house and damage to any other item that comes in contact with the water. Automobiles on the roads get stranded in the floods and they get carried away by the flood waters or water enters into the automobile, which results in damage that cannot be easily repaired. The flood water carries sediment as suspended load. As the flood waters recede, the sediments get deposited and things and structures including the interior of buildings usually get covered with a thick layer of stream-deposited mud. Farmlands affected by floods face a huge loss as they usually result in crop loss. Livestock, pets, and other animals are often carried away by the strong currents of the flood water. Humans who get caught in the high velocity flood waters often get drowned.

Among the secondary effects of flood damage are the disruption of many essential services like gas and electricity. Flood damage also includes the contamination of the drinking water supply, if sewage treatment plants are flooded. This poses a greater threat because this may result in disease and other health hazards, especially in under developed countries. The public transportation systems may also be disrupted during floods, resulting in shortages of food and other supplies.

Tertiary effects of flood damage are generally long-term effects like the location of river channels that may change because of flooding; fewer new channels will develop, leaving the old channels dry. Farmlands with crops get destroyed by the sediment deposition caused by the floods. People may not be able to make it to their workplace due to disruption of services. The floods may also result in destruction of wildlife habitat.

Although floods have some advantages, if we look at it in a broader perspective we can conclude that largely, floods cause havoc to life and property of mankind. By following various preventive measures the effects of flood damage can be reduced to a great extent.

What are the effects of illegal logging in protected lands?

Illegal logging can be very destructive to our environment. It is one of the reasons why we are suffering from floods and landslides.
Apart from the environmental destruction mentioned, illegal logging displaces wildlife and also people. I have read recent estimates that 70% of the teak on the world market is illegally logged in SE Asia. There is a "timber Mafia" logging protected reserves, with corrupt politicians on the payroll, and the teak is shipped through places like Malaysia, where it is re-labled and becomes untraceable. These people do not hesitate to kill environmentalists who try to stop them. They use elephants to pull logs, injecting them with methamphetamines to keep them working. When the elephants become psychotic (as with humans on meth) they are shot. Most of the teak ends up in the US as patio furniture. I work in boat building, and all our boats have teak decks. I look at those decks and see blood.

Effect of the Landslides

Landslides kill people, destroy trees, crops and other plantations.

This catastrophe could drastically affect everyone who lives near an elevated area. A single but relatively strong rainfall, thunderstorm, hurricane / tropical depression could make the soil erode, which will cause immense flooding, and will, definitely rage on the residents below.

More so, in the case of crops, without a doubt, the floods that could be casued by landslides will tremendously damage them, if ot totally wipe them out. However, all this can be prevented if illegal logging, and other unscrupulous practices against mother nature could be checked and controlled.

While in my opinion, the flood attack just simply because that Jakarta no longer have a green area in the city, there were no large park and also the Jakarta water cannal is really really bad. The industries also take a part on this flood because they do not taking care of the environment. The industries makes Jakarta fall down under the sea surface level. The water in the rivers of Jakarta can’t easily deliver its water into the sea.

What Causes Flood?

Do you know what cause floods? Actually everything is because of our fault! There are 3 examples of what cause flood. The first one is, we use wood for most of our furniture and if we need those things made out of wood, the people who work for the furniture, will need to chop down the trees and it cause flood. It happen because the trees absorb water to grow but if the trees are all gone, there are no more place for the water to flows. The second problem is, throwing rubbish every where and throw it not in the correct place, when it is raining the rubbish will be push to the sewer and it will cover the hole until the water cannot flows down, so it become flood. The last thing is because of Global warming people in the world are producing alot of pollution and it will reduce the ozon layer and the world is getting hot, so, the ice in the north and south pole is melting and it will make the sea level rise. So those are the things that cause flood.

Bull Catching Party (Pesta Tangkap Banteng)

Here is an article about cruel animal sports that is happening around the world (sorry it is Indonesian, but I promise I will translate it afterwards) :

Banteng! Kalau dengar kata yang satu ini, gambaran saya adalah, seekor binatang besar bertanduk tajam yang dengan gaharnya menyeruduk orang, apalagi kalau orangnya memakai baju merah, sudah pasti akan dikejar habis-habisan.Di Perancis selatan pertarungan antara banteng dan manusia yang disebut corrida adalah tradisi yang mengakar di masyarakat. Pertama melihat corrida di dalam arenes (arena banteng atau arena gladiator), dengan matador yang meliukan badannya untuk menghindari tanduk si banteng, saya merasa menderita sekali. Karena sebelum bertemu matador si banteng disiksa terlebih dahulu. Tiga tombak tajam ditusukkan ke tubuh banteng. Pertarungan antara manusia dan hewan di dalam arenes akan diakhiri dengan tusukan pedang matador ke tubuh banteng hingga tewas. Itu adalah yang pertama dan yang terakhir saya melihat aksi pertunjukan seperti itu, 13 tahun yang lalu di kota Arles, Perancis Selatan. Tradisi corrida di Perancis selatan yang menempel dengan Spanyol melekat sangat erat. Beberapa kota memiliki arena banteng. Setiap tahun pesta banteng diperingati dengan sangat meriah. Pada satu hari Minggu saya dan suami tidak sengaja terperangkap di salah satu acara corrida, yaitu Abrivados des plages. Artinya, melepaskan banteng di pantai. Saat itu sebenarnya kami bermaksud melewatkan waktu berdua di tepi pantai, menikmati secangkir kopi dan croissant ditemani debur ombak. Mumpung anak-anak sedang menginap di rumah kakek-neneknya. Tapi kok ya, di mana-mana terdapat pagar besi setinggi dua meter sebagai pembatas. Cafe favorit kami yang berada di pantai pun ikut dikurung besi pengaman. Alamak...ternyata, pukul 11 pagi bakalan ada pesta pelepasan banteng di pantai! Mau pulang kok tanggung. Jadilah kami mendekam di dalam cafe sambil menunggu para banteng lewat. Apalagi menurut salah satu pengunjung cafe, pesta banteng ini jauh dari kekerasan dan tidak ada banteng yang dibunuh. Tapi, pemilik cafe menakut-nakuti kami dengan cerita seramnya. Katanya, tahun lalu, lumayan juga yang terluka akibat keseruduk si banteng! Tambahnya lagi, ada seorang ibu yang dengan cerobohnya lewat di pantai sambil mendorong kereta bayi dan bikin panik semua orang yang melihatnya. Karena panik si hewan pemberang itu jadi ikutan panik dan yang ada jadi mengejar semua orang dengan garangnya. Satu orang terpaksa diangkut ke rumah sakit karena kakinya luka parah keseruduk banteng!Kesimpulannya, pemilik cafe meyarankan kami untuk tidak keluar dari balik besi jeruji pengaman. Sekitar pukul 11 mulai terdengar suara gaduh di tengah kerumunan orang. Para pengendara kuda mulai siap beraksi menggiring banteng melewati pantai. Banteng-banteng itu dilepas dari mulai ujung pantai dan digiring sampai ke kandang besi. Oooh, saya pikir tadinya tuh, para banteng bakalan benar-benar dilepaskan begitu saja, lalu para jagoan mencoba menangkap buntut atau tanduk banteng, sebagaimana lazimnya tradisi.Ternyata, para banteng ini dikawal tiga hingga empat pengendara kuda yang berpakaian koboi. Amboi, gagah benar lelaki-lelaki yang duduk di atas kuda itu. Saya salah. Tidak semua koboi itu lelaki. Banyak juga koboi wanita duduk di atas pelana, bahkan sebagian ada yang baru berusia 15 tahun. Wah..wah.. gagah perkasa juga nih cewek-cewek imut, pikir saya. Paras gadis-gadis belia itu begitu cantik dan feminin, tak ada tampang tukang giring banteng deh! Di Indonesia pasti sudah jadi pemain sinetron!Lima belas menit kemudian terdengar suara letusan menggelegar menandakan banteng akan segera dilepaskan. Memang kalau sudah terbawa arus, jadi suka lupa diri. Pesan si pemilik cafe kami lupakan begitu saja. Saya dan suami tanpa sadar sudah keluar dari jeruji besi yang memang jaraknya renggang satu sama lain. Kami berada di tengah pantai keasyikan melihat binatang penyeruduk ini lewat. Setiap kali rombongan koboi dan banteng lewat, para penangkap banteng dengan gigihnya mengejar binatang itu untuk bisa menangkap buntut si hewan. Sumpah, saya heran betul, kebanyakan para penangkap adalah anak-anak. Kok bisa ya mereka tidak ketakutan. Lalu para orang tuanya, apa tidak cemas melihat anak mereka mengejar banteng liar? Kebayang aja kalau saya melihat anak saya lari-lari mencoba menangkap buntut banteng, dijamin saya langsung pingsan di tempat dan boro-boro sempat mengingatkan mereka agar hati-hati.Tiba-tiba, seorang penangkap berlari kencang ke arah kerumuman kami sambil berteriak panik!“Ada banteng lepas! Awas! Ada banteng kabur. Minggir semuanya!”Yang melintas di kepala saya hanya satu: kabur, mengamankan diri di balik jeruji besi. Saya celingukan mencari Kang Dadang. Waduh! Suami saya tidak ada di samping saya. Dia sudah kabur duluan! Tak ada waktu untuk ngomel. Saya lari sekencang-kencangnya ke balik besi pengaman. Untunglah saya berhasil kembali ke area aman meski sedikit memendam dongkol di hati karena ditinggal suami. Ada tiga banteng yang kabur. Bagusnya banteng-banteng itu lari ke arah laut, bukan ke arah pentonton. Melihat banteng lari menjauh, pelan-pelan para penonton kembali ke luar dari pagar pengaman dan berjalan menuju laut. Aahhh kasihan sekali... saya melihat bagaimana tiga banteng berenang hingga jauh ke laut. Ternyata banteng-banteng itu panik melihat gerombolan manusia. Banteng-banteng itu tidak tahu kalau kami juga panik melihat mereka. Satu banteng hilang cepat ditelan laut. Satu banteng berhasil diselamatkan. Tepuk tangan bergemuruh riuh tanda salut penonton kepada para penggiring banteng berkuda. Untuk menyelamatkan banteng, para koboi dan kudanya ikutan menceburkan diri ke laut. Hebatnya para koboi ini. Mereka harus menenangkan kuda-kuda mereka yang kecebur laut sambil berupaya menghalau banteng agar kembali ke arah pantai. Satu banteng lagi berakhir dramatis. Dia terus berlari masuk ke dalam laut hingga hanya tanduknya yang terlihat. Para pengendara jet ski, hingga kapal kecil mencoba mencegah si hewan agar berhenti berenang. Ketika akhirnya berhasil dihentikan, badan dan tanduk banteng di tarik dengan tali untuk dibawa ke pantai. Sayang sekali, setelah coba diselamatkan, umur hewan itu berakhir juga. Disitulah bedanya, jika di corrida biasa si banteng sengaja di bunuh, di acara ini malah diselamatkan. Saya mencoba mengambil gambar banteng yang tewas, tapi ditegur oleh salah satu koboi. “Nona, tolong jangan ambil foto banteng saya yang mati,” mata koboi lelaki muda itu berkaca-kaca. Dia sangat terpukul dengan perginya si banteng. Saya pun meminta maaf dan pergi. Baru saya ketahui, jika para banteng yang dilepas itu adalah milik dari peternakan para koboi. Suasana yang tadinya begitu semarak, jadi sedikit terganggu dengan matinya si banteng. Suara letusan kembali menggelegar menandakan akhir dari pelepasan banteng. Para penggiring banteng berbaris membentuk setengah lingkaran. Kami memberikan hormat atas keberhasilan dan keberanian mereka.Ternyata tidak semua pesta banteng menyeramkan. Pesta yang seru dan bikin adrenalin melonjak ini memungkinkan penonton ikut terlibat langsung.

A particular driver behind IUU fishing is the failure of a number of flag states to exercise any effective regulation over ships on their registers – which in turn creates an incentive for ships to register under these 'flags of convenience'.

Since no-one is reporting catches made by pirates, their level of fishing cannot be accurately quantified. However, industry observers think that IUU occurs in most fisheries, and accounts for up to 30% of total catches in some important fisheries.

it refers to a geological phenomenon where underground pools of mud become pressurized and sometimes spew out to the surface.
Want to know what happens when you stand on top of one of those and start drilling into it?

You can ask the people at the drilling company, PT Lapindo Brantas, who began an operation in East Java, Indonesia to drill for natural gas (to a depth where no gas had previously been found), on a fault line a short distance away from the Ring of Fire. In an attempt to avoid a tragedy that even Ray Charles could see coming, more experienced drillers tried to warn them to stay away from the dangerous terrain, but the PT team just chuckled, swilled a beer and insisted that it was totally going to work.

The Disaster:
Having already spit in the face of sensibility, the drill team decided it was time to cock punch the law as well, so in the second phase of drilling they opted not to use the required protective casing to stabilize the drill site, presumably subcontracting the job out to the Foot Clan.

Unsurprisingly, running a giant drill next to a fault line tends to result in seismic activity, and the result was the eruption of a mud volcano which continues to this very moment, spewing 88,000 cubic feet of bullshit each day and leaving 1.5 million people without homes as a result.

The drill team responsible first tried to pass the blame off on an earthquake that occurred two days before in Central Java, forming faults as far as their drill site 186 miles away. When scientists pointed out that an earthquake that severe would've shut down drilling (which obviously it hadn't), PT Lapindo Brantas was ordered to pay $278 million.

Effects of Extinct Animals

If a species go extinct, anything it used to eat (plants/animals) now has one less predator and their number will increase. If the increase too much unchecked by the predators they may use too many resources and cause their own starvation. Another animal might start eating them tough--since now they don't have to compete with the extinct specie anymore.

Also, any animal which was a predator to the now-extinct species has lost a food source. They may have to find something else to eat or they starve to extinction too.

Causes of Illegal Logging

Weak governance and corruption in timber producing countries and the failure of governments in consumer countries like the EU, US and Japan to ban the import of illegally and destructively logged timber, allows unscrupulous logging companies and timber traders worldwide to exploit ancient forests.

The worldwide increase in demand for timber products, regardless of their legality, is fuelling forest destruction. For example the European Union is a significant importer of timber from regions where illegal and destructive logging is rampant.

Effect of Illegal Logging

Illegal logging will mainly cause land slide, flash flood and global warming.
Cause trees hold the soil to make it more stronger and prevents land slide.
Flash flood can happen because trees sip the water and preventing it to harm people. Global warming is mainly caused by too much Carbon Dioxide that traps heat and making it more hot to melt the ice in north pole and south pole, trees uses carbon dioxide to make their food so if there are many trees they will prevent carbon dioxide to go up in our atmosphere.

Solutions to Illegal Logging

There are several solutions to the problem of illegal logging. They include enforcement and creation of international and national laws, as well as independent timber certification companies that work with timber companies to assess and verify the legal, ecological and social sustainability of any timber operation and its wood products.

By exerting influence through the supply chain, governments have enormous power to encourage responsible forest management and reduce the demand for illegally sourced forest products. Government purchases account for a substantial proportion of world trade in timber products. In 2001, U.S. state and local government purchasing exceeded $1.22 trillion, more than 11 percent of the total U. S. gross domestic product.

Tiger as an animal trafficking victim

animal trafficking is the 3rd most illegal trading in the world. first, they tortue the animals, then they cut them into half to make a statue and sell it, or even cut their skin and make it into coats, belts, shoes, wallet and etc.. so they could get multi billion money. Even if the animals are extinct, they still hunt them to get MORE money.

this poor innocent tiger is chopped into half by the people who is trying to do animal trafficking, which is ILLEGAL! the person wants to make coat from the animal's skin, and its not good!

As you know, there are a lot of animals that are endangered. They're endangered mostly because of humans (which are us). We kill (and eat) their food and themselves, we destroy their natural habitat, we hunt them for furniture and clothes, and lots more. Later more about the effect and solution. ;) ;)

to stop deforestation we have to stop thinking that more is better, because it is not true, we have to be happy of what we already have, we can't keep doing this, we ahev to stop building malls, huge huses, banks, etc..., if we already have 2 or 3 malls in one city, than that will be enough, so as I already said we haave top be happy of what we have...

For us, the most important thing is be happy, and of course our life.

so if we destroy the forests, than there will be no trees, because tree make us breath and if there are no trees than many animals will loose their house or even worse they will die ....
